A Summary of Catholic Social Teaching

Pope Leo the Great wrote the first encyclical on Catholic social teachings in response to the harsh treatment of workers during the industrial revolution. Since then the Church has extended its social teachings to the family, the work environment, the economic/business community, the political community, the international community, the environment, the pursuit of peace and the situation of war.

 

Fr. Spitzer summarizes Catholic Social Teaching

In this article, Fr. Spitzer summarizes the three main aspects of Catholic social teaching including: doctrine or prudential judgement, the six principles of Catholic social teaching, seven major areas of Catholic Social teaching. Fr. Spitzer illustrates through these three aspects how the dignity of man is the root of Catholic social teaching.

Fr. Robert J. Spitzer, S.J., Ph.D. is a Catholic Priest in the Jesuit order (Society of Jesus) and is currently the President of the Magis Center and the Spitzer Center. He has made many TV appearances including: Larry King Live (debating Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow), the Today Show (debating on the topic of active euthanasia), The History Channel in “God and The Universe,” a multiple part PBS series “Closer to the Truth,” and the Hugh Hewitt Show. Currently appearing weekly on EWTN in “Father Spitzer’s Universe“.
