We live in a vast universe
The universe is astoundingly vast, meaning, our solar system is one of hundreds of billions in the Milky Way, and there are hundreds of billions of other galaxies in the universe. For some, like Dr. Jennifer Wiseman, this invokes a sense of awe, wonder and appreciation. For others, the mere implication of vastness means we are small or insignificant with regards to our place in the universe.
But What does Vast Mean?
While we don’t know whether the vast universe is infinite, we do know that it has been expanding and likely will continue to expand. Thus, the vastness of the universe does not negate our meaning, but rather implies a deep complexity and order within the vast universe.
Insignificance and the Meaning of the Universe
Thanks to science, we know we are not at the center of the universe, and that our lifespans are very short compared to the expansive space and time of the universe. But this doesn’t have to be a frightening or discouraging consideration. There is universal meaning to be found.

Dr. Wiseman finds joy in the investigation of the mysteries around us, and considers it a privilege to be able to look for meaning in our lives, the meaning of the universe, and to share the joy of discovering meaning with others.
When viewing our place in the universe with a lens of gratitude, we don’t seem very insignificant at all — being an active participant in this wonderful universe gives our small lives a vast meaning of purpose.
