After his recent death, the Vatican released the last spiritual testament of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. Like much of his life’s work, one key issue Benedict addressed in this letter is the relationship between faith and science.
In this article on First Things, Purposeful Universe project co-lead Dr. Dan Kuebler elaborates on the meaning of Pope Benedict’s teachings on this subject, including the confusion of materialist philosophies for science, how faith and science do not contradict one another, and the merits and limits of science.
Dr. Kuebler also highlights how Pope Benedict’s teachings underscore the purpose within individual human lives, and how this philosophy is compatible with the science of evolution:
“We are not some casual and meaningless product of evolution. Each of us is the result of a thought of God.” —Pope Benedict XVI
