The Beatitudes call us to see earth in the light of heaven. The world’s proposed sources of joy run dry very quickly. If we want true joy, lasting happiness, then we should consider how Christ proposes it is to be sought. The call of Our Lord’s Beatitudes is to have a heart like His: one that is poor in spirit, open to mourning what we ought to truly mourn; a heart that is meek, merciful, pure; a heart that longs for true justice and faces persecution cheerfully. This is not the kind of heart that we usually hear will find happiness. Many tell us that our heart should be proud, that we should avoid sorrow at all costs, that meekness and mercy are simply weakness and will not bring us one ounce of satisfaction. Yet, we see Christ’s heart is satisfied. He has inherited the whole world. His thirst for justice to come and reign is slaked through the fruits of His Passion and Resurrection being spread throughout the whole world by the Church. Christ has shown us the way to true happiness. And the saints have run in that path, cheerfully in this world, all the way into the next. Their joy is complete, and it shall not be taken from them. May we follow them in Christ our Way!
