Tuesday of the Twenty-seventh Week in Ordinary Time
There are some things that are important: for example, making your bed in the morning, cleaning your room, doing the dishes and taking out the trash, putting in a good day’s work, and preparing for the future. Still, there are some things that are even more important: for example, loving your neighbor. So, when the floods come, you forget about the sheets on your bed. You forget about the dishes in the sink. You let go of your future plans and think short term: how can I save my own life and maybe even that of my neighbor? Better still would be to ask yourself: how can I save my own soul and maybe even the soul of my neighbor? This latter question is more urgent because the goods of the soul are even more important than the goods of the body, as counterintuitive as that might seem. You can maintain a fine body and yet be a truly rotten person due to defects of soul. Better to have a good soul, even with a deficient body.
Seek first the Kingdom of God. Seek the goods of the soul, mindful that they come only as God’s gift, that is to say, by his grace. That is why Mary is praised for listening at the feet of Jesus while Martha is censured for focusing on housework. According to Jesus Christ himself, the housework was the lesser part.
You: choose the better part, no matter how busy you might like to be. The waters of the flood are coming, so choose the better part. At the very, very least, go to Church on Sunday and bring your loved ones with you.
