Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Here I am, Lord; I come to do Your will.” This is today’s Responsorial Psalm, and it speaks to our mission in life: to do the Lord’s will. Sometimes it’s difficult to serve the Lord, to surrender our own desires to His. But God has created each of us with a purpose in mind, and His will for us is precisely to fulfill that purpose. When we do His will, we accomplish the very thing that we are made for, the thing that makes us the best version of ourselves.
St. Ignatius knew this well. In his “First Principle and Foundation,” he writes, “Man is created to praise, reverence, and serve God our Lord, and by this means to save his soul.” Everything else in life flows from this mission. Whether we’re discerning our vocation in life, or simply deciding what to do with a day off, we can always lean on this foundation – we need only ask what will help us to serve the Lord best, because we come to do His will.
