Little is known about Saint Matthias, the apostle we celebrate today. We know he had been following Jesus since the time of the baptism of John, we know that he was chosen by prayer and the casting of lots to replace Judas. Perhaps this election was a surprise for Matthias himself. “Why me?” is a question we may ask ourselves throughout life in times of distress, in times of great joy or just in times of bewilderment. Our life and its many twists and turns can seem such a mystery sometimes.
But Jesus comes to shed light on the mystery of our existence, telling each and everyone of us, “I have chosen you. You are my friend. Love one another.” Words that are at the same time easy to understand and difficult to truly live out. No matter where our life might take us, no matter what we find ourselves being chosen for, let these words be our foundation. St. Matthias, apostle of our Lord, pray for us!
