Memorial of Saint Teresa of Jesus, Virgin and Doctor of the Church

The Galatians were very concerned about a distraction. Did those of Jewish descent have to give up circumcision? Did those of gentile descent have to take up the practice of circumcision? Saint Paul summarizes very clearly for them how to refocus on the heart of Christianity: “In Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.” (Galatians 5:6) The Pharisees, too, were very concerned about a distraction. Why was Jesus not observing the proper washing before meals? Our Lord summarizes very clearly for them how to refocus on their heart: “But as to what is within, give alms, and behold, everything will be clean for you.” (Luke 11:41)

Saint Teresa of Avila spent her life helping others to focus on growing in charity: that burning love for God above all things that is shown in concrete acts of charity for those whom God loves, namely our neighbor. The Carmels which she founded focused again on that love through contemplating God’s great love for us, and then humbly sharing that love with those who live under the same roof. May this great doctor of the Church intercede for us when we get distracted in various arguments, that the Word of God proclaimed in the Church may call us back to love, to alms, to the gift of Christ.
