Imagine this: You invite someone to your house for dinner. Not only do they not observe the customary rituals, but they also criticize you and your actions. This is exactly what Jesus does at the house of his host, the Pharisee. We could only imagine what followed this dialogue…“so anyway, what’s for dinner?”
Such a scene is a reminder that Jesus comes to shake us up, to call us to conversion. Sometimes this can come from our own, inspired examination of conscience, but it can also come directly from one of our brothers and sisters. It’s worthwhile to reflect on how we respond to fraternal correction. Are we dismissive, combative, defensive, completely crushed? May we have an openness to growth without fearing a loss of love and dignity. These will always be guaranteed by Christ.
