A popular myth currently very much in vogue across much of modern culture is the concept of the self-made person. This myth supposes that a person can simply will themselves to power, position, wealth, fame, and other trappings of worldly success through their own sheer force of will. While we certainly use the gifts that God has given us, we are not the source of them or of ourselves. Not one of us created his or her own being. Nor do we have the power to sustain ourselves in being for even a single moment. All that we have and are, our talents, abilities, bodies, and souls are sustained in being at every moment through the infinite love of God.
It is counter-cultural to admit that we are small, weak, imperfect, defective, and dependent at every moment of our lives. But this is our actual, lived human reality. And it’s okay because God knows us and loves us intensely and is constantly calling us back to Himself. But we cannot really have a relationship with God if we believe that we are gods ourselves. And we cannot receive healing if we are unwilling to admit our need for a divine physician.
