"Lord, what about him?" asks Peter as he looked to John, the disciple whom Jesus loved. Is it a question that stems from pure curiosity or from a curiosity that comes from a need to compare oneself with the other? What we know for a fact is that the spiritual life is not exempt from comparisons. It may be tempting to assess who is more blessed, who is closer to God, who receives more spiritual insights.
Jesus' response shows us that we shouldn’t focus too much on the way that he deals with others in comparison to the way he deals with us. “What concern is it of yours? You follow me." Christ will be present in the lives of others in ways different from the way He is present to us. This is not something to despair over. We know that God provides us with everything we need. And that each and every gift given to our brothers and sisters is a gift for us as well. What matters is His desire that we be close to him. “You follow me.”
