Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

During my time in college, I drifted away from the Church and lost my faith. I continued to stay away from the Church as a young adult. During those years, my mom constantly prayed for me and always asked the Blessed Mother Mary "to show the right path" to her son. To make the story short, I came back to my Catholic faith and then decided to join the Jesuit Novitiate. When I informed my mom that I wanted to join the Novitiate, she was furious because she wanted me to become a family man. I responded, "Well, Mom, be careful with what you pray for."

There is a little similarity between the story of Holy Mother Mary and mom. My mother rejoiced because I finally came back to the faith, but there was sadness for her as I decided to join the religious life. Similarly, there is sadness and joy in the story of the wedding at Cana that we hear in today's Gospel. In the Gospel, Mary tells Jesus that the wedding hosts have no wine. Jesus made striking responses to his mother, “My hour has not yet come.” We can read what Jesus told Mary with an interpretation as follows: "Mother, be careful with what you wish; if I perform this miracle, I will begin to reveal my divinity, and when that happens, I begin my journey to Calvary. When I begin that journey, you will begin it too. We both will end on Calvary; on that spot, you will be the Sorrowful Mother. Now, considering all that pain and suffering you must endure, Mother, do you want me to reveal the fullness of my divinity by producing wine miraculously?”

Unlike my mother, who is unaware of the consequences of her prayers, Mary understands precisely what she is asking for with her wish. She willingly accepts her role as the Sorrowful Mother and the Mother of the Church. The emotions she must have felt—both joy and sadness—were profound. Mary had anticipated this moment since the angel Gabriel visited her. As the years went by, she became more prepared for its solemn arrival, which is why she instructed the servants, "Do whatever He tells you."
