"See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father," says Jesus today on this memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels.
We might ask ourselves, if they’re always looking upon the face of our heavenly Father, then how can they possibly be watching over us as well? Biblical descriptions of angels are varied and will not conform to what we might have in mind when we think of them. If you read chapter 10 of the prophet Ezekiel, you’ll see that they’ve got eyes, wings, and even faces to spare. One set of eyes on God, one set of eyes on us, perhaps.
And we, the unwinged with one face and one set of eyes, do we see the Father’s love? Do we see that we’re cared for? With the eyes of the heart that see deeper and further than our own eyes ever could, let us consider those moments where providential love and protection have come through.
