Saturday of the Thirty-third Week in Ordinary Time

Superficially, the Gospel reading today is almost humorous in that the Sadducees are attempting to ensnare the Son of God Himself in logical contradiction. Jesus knows what they are up to from the start and, even more than this, his answer demonstrates that the hypothetical scenario they challenge him with ultimately comes from an inaccurate understanding of reality.

A really wonderful and hopeful thing about this particular passage is that Jesus affirms that our God is a God of the living. The children of God will rise and will no longer be able to die. In essence, Jesus affirms the reality of the resurrection and declares that those who are found worthy of eternal life will live with God forever. It can be very easy for us as Christians to become desensitized to what a big deal this actually is. A significant part of our responsibility as people of God is to continually cultivate a disposition of gratitude for the infinite goodness that God has designed for us.
