Friday of the Seventh Week in Ordinary Time

In the Gospel of today’s Mass, Jesus teaches that God alone is the creator of man and woman and that true marriage is indissoluble.  These facts are denied in our woke society. But, let us go on to the teaching in the 1st reading, the necessity of friendship. True friendship is certainly a state of mind needed by parties planning to enter marriage. If it is not there, when the marriage hits a bump, it fails. Read why. Then see why a true friend is essential for developing a genuine human personality and is also needed for spiritual growth.

The reading spells out the difference between a friend and a buddy. So, read it slowly. What makes friendship genuine? What characterized the relationship of the Old Testament characters David and Jonathan, or in our own time, that of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter?  Can I identify that quality in myself?

Resolved: Today I’ll spend some time thinking about my friends, asking myself what makes them friends, how they enhance my own spiritual growth, drawing me closer to Jesus, for those with whom he lived and those for whom he died.
