Thursday of Holy Week
“I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.” Christ himself says these words in today’s Gospel. His whole life is a model for us, to show us the way to everlasting life. And today he models true communion for us, at the Last Supper.
What does true communion look like? It is offering up our very selves for one another, as Jesus does in the Eucharist. It is humbling ourselves and washing one another’s feet, as Christ does for his disciples. Although he is our Lord, Christ comes not to dominate us but to serve us. This is the type of communion that Christ wants for us; it is the communion that he wants us to have with each other. This offering of self does not always come easily to us, but Christ has shown us the way and leads us. Today, let us pray for the grace of true communion, both with God and with every person we meet, so that we may be more like our Lord Jesus.
