Friday of the Third Week of Lent

The greatest commandment is to love God with all one’s heart, mind, and strength. But what does this mean? What is God really asking of us?

Loving God requires recognition that He is our highest good. It requires recognition that we have been created by God for relationship with God. The purpose of our existence is to enjoy love, peace, and eternal bliss in the infinitude of God’s eternal glory. That is actually our reason for being. Each one of us is a heavenly citizen making an earthly pilgrimage.

Loving God with all one’s heart, soul, and strength means living into this reality to the greatest extent possible. It means approaching each task and conversation in each day from the perspective that we have been created for this kind of eternal relationship with God. How much different would each moment of our lives be if we kept this essential truth burning brightly at the forefront of our minds? How would our habits change? How would our attitudes change? How would our priorities change? All of these considerations are important for real conversion of heart, particularly as we continue our journey through this Lenten season.
