Saint Charles Lwanga and Companions, Martyrs
When asked by the chief priests, scribes, and elders by what authority Jesus does the things he does, the Lord responds by bringing up John the Baptist, whose memory was still fresh in the hearts and minds of those present. Jesus evokes John’s baptism, the moment in which he himself heard the Father’s voice saying,
“You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased” (Mk 1:11).
In this sentence, we find the identity and authority of Jesus.
Through our own baptism, the Father’s voice rings true for us as well. We are God’s beloved daughters and sons. May we always be open to listening to this voice and acting under his authority.
