Memorial of Saint Francis of Assisi

In today’s gospel, Jesus reproaches the unrepentant towns that pay no attention to the Gospel. Something good was offered, and it was not received, no change took place, no action was initiated.

Today we celebrate a man of action, a man of change, one who truly lived out the Good News he received. St. Francis of Assisi is one of the most well-known saints beyond the boundaries of the Church which he so arduously worked to rebuild.

What message did he offer us that speaks to the hearts of every generation the world over? All is gift. Creation, the sun, the water, the wind are there for us to enjoy and to love as brothers and sisters. All are signs of God’s providential love that seeks us in every situation: in the warmth and in the cold, in the rain and in times of drought. Everything can bring us closer to contemplating his love. In gratitude, simplicity of life can ensue. May we be open to receiving him in all that he wishes to give us.

St. Francis of Assisi, pray for us!
