Few gospel passages reveal the humanity of our Lord as much as today’s. If we take a moment to think about it, this is someone who sends his followers on mission uncertain of what the results will be. Will they have listened to his instructions? Will they have doubts and become discouraged?
We have the answer: No! They return rejoicing, amazed at all they were able to do in the name of Jesus. Next, Jesus rejoices in the Holy Spirit, giving his Father thanks and praise. It’s happening. The Good News is spreading. God is being revealed to the childlike and by the childlike. It’s easy to imagine his face moved with joy as he says, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.”
Sharing the joy of the gospel requires a certain level of vulnerability. We don’t know what will come of it. But when we do, joy is bound to spread and multiply, and our eyes will be blessed for seeing what we see.
Lord, give us your heart, that we may be joyful children of our Father in heaven.
