Wednesday of the Third Week of Lent

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets.” The law can be summarized as love of God and love of neighbor. The prophets are those that denounced the two main things that go against the law: idolatry (against love of God) and injustice (against love of neighbor). “I have come not to abolish but to fulfill,” Jesus continues.

Today, injustice is often talked about, idolatry, less so. After all, we aren’t prostrating ourselves before other gods. But idolatry can arise in the subtlest of forms when we prefer created things, or wealth, or status above love for God. When this is the case, justice, love for neighbor also falls by the wayside.

The law and the prophets are fulfilled in Jesus. He is the one who totally gives himself to the Father for us. May we allow him evermore into our hearts, that he might do the same.
