Monday of the Fifth Week of Lent

The lengthy first reading tells the story of Susana whose reputation was being comprised two degenerate men who threatened to condemn her to a false judgement. Daniel, the prophet, rose up in their defense and revealed the deceit of the two false witnesses. For those in the early church, their state in life had found them in a defenseless position caused by  the growing economic disparity characteristic of Roman Imperial Society. Justice or the avoidance of justice was for the wealthy and the poor had little recourse to advocate for their defense. The story of Susana’s victory over corruption because of God’s intervention by the prophet Daniel provided them with a hope filled vision that their current situation would be resolved at the final judgement. This message preached had a double edge. The story of Susana reminded the early Christians that they too will be held in judgment for actions that were contrary to God’s intention.
