Seventh Sunday of Easter OR Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord
The Gospel today speaks of love and what better reading could we have on a day when our country celebrates Mother’s day. Mothers play an important if not fundamental role in our faith. It was Mary’s yes and acceptance of God’s will in her life that made her both the mother of God and the model of Christians. This is the love that John the Evangelist speaks of in today’s gospel: a love of God that has as its consequence the indwelling of God.
For many of us, the unconditional love of our mothers has served as a sign of God’s love for us. But the ultimate mother of our faith is Mary whose unconditional yes serves as the great model for all Christians. In this yes to God, Mary stands as one of the great leaders of the Church because by her leadership, she leads us to the heart of her son and asks of us not so much to be leaders, but followers of Christ.
