Friday of the Fifteenth Week in Ordinary Time
Today’s first reading tells the story of the Passover meal, the commemoration of the evening meal prior to the Hebrew’s departure from servitude in Egypt. According to the injunction given by Moses, this meal was to be repeated as a memorial, a remembrance, of Israel’s captivity in Egypt and God’s delivery from this captivity. By reenacting the meal the memory and all that it stands for is reenacted as well.
Memory is an important part of our lives. The act of remembering an event or action provides us with values by which we can shape and decide our actions. It is for these reasons that memories, both good and bad, are so important to us.
Perhaps, the reflectivity of the summer may be a good time to look at what is on the “memory drive” of our mental computers. It would be good to place a greater emphasis on certain events and put some memories in the discard pile.
