The Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Sometimes we are willing to give Jesus everything-except the one thing He really wants.

It is possible to do many good works in Jesus’ name, wearing ourselves down with exertion, while avoiding the light yoke which Jesus truly wants us to shoulder.

What if we were to appear before the Lord on the day of our death, our arms piled high with the good works we did in his name, and He were to say, “I wanted none of it.”

Jesus tells us in today’s gospel that there is only one thing that is necessary: to be in His presence and listen to the word that He speaks to us, allowing Him to choose the good works he will accomplish through us.
