Memorial of Saint Martin of Tours, Bishop
“Be on your guard!” Jesus exhorts today, urging us not to cause evil but rather to forgive those who inflict evil upon us. The Apostles’ response is telling, as they beg their Master “Increase our faith.” To live such radical fidelity and love requires a profound faith rooted in the “kindly spirit” of God’s wisdom. This is the sort of faith that can move mulberry trees, as Jesus mentions. Is there someone who has mistreated us or whom we have mistreated? Perhaps God’s Spirit who “fills the world” and “is all-embracing” is also inviting us to reconcile in some way with this person. Let us pray for wisdom and faith, such that we can say with the psalmist, “Guide me, Lord, along the everlasting way.”
