Tuesday of the Second Week of Lent

Who does not want in some way to be great?  Greatness is eminently appealing.  We want to be great in our professions, as parents, or in numerous other ways.  Our Lord points us today to the measure of greatness: “The greatest among you must be your servant.” A favorite Ignatian prayer is “Lord, teach me to be generous, teach me to serve you as you deserve, to give and not to count the cost…” Ignatius imagined God in his greatness as eminently generous, as always “laboring” for us.  Can we make an offering in return for such Divine generosity?  Let us remember the saying that God cannot be outdone in generosity, and Jesus’ words that “whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”

Let us give more, suffer more, and serve more today and the rest of Lent.
