Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Jesus’ miracle described in today’s Gospel invites me to reflect on my baptism. Because I was baptized I have the power to hear deep within me the word of God. During my daily tasks, it constantly focuses my attention on Jesus’ present activity: “he makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.” That is the work of redemption.
His heavenly Father sent him, the Word, to proclaim his word. This takes place according to the Father’s plan. All that the Word Made Flesh said the Word Made Flesh did. But he has need of me in order for that word to become heard in my own little world.
The Word Made Flesh came to redeem the whole human race. The work of redemption is incomplete in me and in my world. Jesus asks me to be his fellow worker, his companion in the work of redemption. I do so by my union with him and in my awareness of the Father’s plan in my dealings with others.
Today I shall pray to Mary to give me the attitude she had when she responded to the Father’s invitation to cooperate in his plan: “May it done to me according to your word.”
