Friday of the Second Week of Advent

In the recent movie about Mother Teresa of Calcutta, The Letters (2015), the director, William Read, tried to show how Mother Teresa received her “inspiration,” her “call within a call” on the train ride from Calcutta to Darjeeling as she traveled to make her annual retreat on the tenth of September 1946. Following that journey, she left the Lorreto convent and started her work with the poor and destitute.

In today’s scripture, the Prophet Isaiah says, “I, the LORD, your God, teach you what is for your good, and lead you on the way you should go.”  The liturgical calendar, however, does not fit with the working calendar of most people. December is a busy time for parties, the completion of work, and many travels. Advent season can be a challenging time for us to find a way to listen and allow God to teach us and to lead us to the place where we are meant to be.

But, we can learn a lesson from Mother Teresa.  We can always turn to the Lord just as we are and wherever we are.  We can allow Him to meet us in the middle of the train ride, bus station, in the middle of your hopes, fears, and desires.
