Feast of St. Mary Magdalene
According to tradition Mary Magdalene was the sinful woman out of whom Jesus cast seven devils. The sinner became the saint, the first one to announce the Resurrection.
A sinner? What is sin? Jeremiah gives an excellent definition in yesterday’s 1st reading. “Two evils my people have done: they have forsaken me, the source of living waters. They have dug themselves cisterns, broken cisterns, that hold no water.”
Dismiss the Lord and seek excitement in what will never bring satisfaction.
Read how Jeremiah expands this twofold characteristic of sin in today’s 1st reading, and then reflect how in today’s Gospel Mary Magdalene put everything aside to seek the Lord and how he graced her with his presence. That is sanctity.
How do I see sin? And how am I open to sanctity? Which one do I regularly pursue – not in theory; in practice. St. Mary Magdalene: Pray for me and for those I love.
