Memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary
When we look at the various visual portrayals of Jesus we have to remind ourselves that Jesus was not all smiles. Today’s readings recount Jesus’ admonition to groups of people who exhibited hypocrisy in religious practice. “Woe to you…” is spoken several times and these warnings sound like thunder compared to some of the other phrases in the gospel. Hypocrisy points out those things done which are opposite of what is spoken. Actions speak louder than words, as the saying goes and this saying certainly has some truth. Keeping our actions aligned with our words takes a tremendous effort and the words of Jesus may instill in us the idea that we should keep our words few and our actions clear.
