The Seventh Day in the Octave of Christmas

Il notte di San Silvrestro

New Year’s Eve

In the not to distant past there was a delightful, if not somewhat hazardous, custom in parts of Italy of throwing things you no longer want out the window on New Year’s eve and New Year’s day. Items included books, papers, sofas, and old pots and pans. Noting today’s sensibilites for ecology and proper disposal, tossing things out the window may not be the best course of action but there is something viscerally pleasing to give something the “heave ho” that you do not want and really do not need. Perhaps things like sofas and old pots and pans can find a home in one of the many charity centers but let us pick one or two things that keep us from really being the best people God has called us to be and let’s see how far we can toss these attitudes out the window and enjoy watching them smash on the cement.

A blessed and happy New Year to all!
