Feast of the Chair of Saint Peter, Apostle
Today is the feast of the Chair of Saint Peter. Interestingly, February 22nd is also the birthday of George Washington. Since 1885, the United States has been honoring the birth of George Washington by celebrating President’s Day. However, America did not always celebrate President’s Day on February, 22. Officially it is celebrated on the 3rd Monday of February.
What is the difference between President’s Day and the Feast of the Chair of Saint Peter, or we may call it the Pope’s Day? Americans celebrate the birthday of George Washington as a remembrance to the majesty of the office of the presidency. The president of United States has been regarded as the most powerful man on the earth. The Chair of Saint Peter rests upon faith. It neither has mighty military nor economic power. The pope only has faith, hope, love, mercy and the Sacraments. More importantly, the Church only has its bible as guidance through turbulent times.
When you hear Jesus’ words, “I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church,” how do you feel about the possibility that like Peter, you are also called to proclaim the name of Jesus with faith, hope, and love?
