Notice how it feels when people invite you to go out of your comfort zone. Do you rejoice at the thought of having different experiences? Or do you prefer the comfort of your routine? How do you feel about attempts by outsiders to modify your routine, such as those who force you to change your clock, to spring forward now and later fall back? Are you grateful to them, or do you feel resentment?
Ultimately, neither having new experiences nor keeping to routines will make us happy. Happiness comes from God’s grace. Sometimes God invites us to try new things, and sometimes He asks us to stay the same. When God told Abraham (Abram, as he was then called): “Go forth from the land of your kinsfolk and from your father’s house to a land that I will show you,” Abraham went.
Consider again, carefully: are you so attached to routine that you resent intrusions? On the other hand, are you so eager for change that you resent boredom? Listen today for God’s call: whether it is to stay the same or to try something new, and may you have the grace to answer that call, as Abraham did, and, may you find your truest joy in doing God’s will.
