Tuesday of the Eighth Week in Ordinary Time

Angels have a strong desire to see (ἐπιθυμοῦσιν ἄγγελοι παρακύψαι), according to 1 Peter 1:12.  They have a strong desire to see God and to see what God does with his creation, especially when he is redeeming it.  Their desire, it seems, is infinite.

You, on the other hand, have a strong desire to see novelties.  News, videos, sports, social media, new places, new people, new things.  Your desire, it seems, is also infinite.

It is not your fault that you are not an angel, that you are not capable of seeing God the way they are.  Call them “lucky.”  Call them “blessed.”  Call them “saints.”  But, meanwhile, what are you to do with your strong desire to see?

My advice: feed it properly.  Nourish it.  Look for ways to add healthy sights and to cut out unhealthy sights.  One of the best ways to do this is to make a retreat according to the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola.  There you will find many exercises in seeing and in desiring.

“You will see greater things than these” (John 1:50).
