Memorial of Saint Teresa of Jesus, Virgin and Doctor of the Church

Crowds of people followed Jesus during much of his public ministry, but he never let himself be seduced by them; he never gave in to their adulation. What he sought then was a personal encounter; what he seeks now is the same.

Salomon’s wisdom was touted beyond the borders; people came from afar to experience it. Jesus reveals true wisdom. He is the Word of God; the Light of the World, and he has died to share what he has with all.

The reference he makes to Jonah in today’s Gospel obviously refers to his death and resurrection. After three days in the belly of the earth, he rose and conquered death.

This fact puts a cap on all his words and actions. Therefore the primary meaning of wisdom is: Accept his personal invitation to me to follow him through my daily sufferings and eventual death so that I might one day share in his glory. That’s my vocation.
