Wednesday after Epiphany
You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink. Likewise, you can show a man a miracle, but you can’t make him believe. The Apostles saw Jesus miraculously feed over 5,000 people, and they still had no clue what it could mean. An event that defied explanation, and the Apostles were still astounded by Jesus walking on water. All because “their hearts were hardened” (Mk.6:52). Their hearts were hardened, and so they did not yet believe.
What does it take to believe? First and foremost, it takes wonder. The Apostles saw a miracle, and had no sense of marvel at what just happened. How many works of God do we pass by in a single day without any sense of awe or wonder? The mere fact that we exist, that there is something rather than sheer nothingness, is itself a mind-boggling reality. Never take this world for granted. Never fail to let God’s works utterly amaze you—beginning with the work of creation. Be amazed, let the wonder shatter the hardness of your heart, and believe.
