Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that the boats were in danger of sinking.”

When God acts, or better said, when we obey the promptings of God in our lives, others will notice. In today’s gospel, Jesus finds Simon and the others after a long and unsuccessful night of fishing. After being asked by the Lord to lower the nets one more time, a weary and somewhat doubtful Simon obeys. What follows is a miracle: an overly abundant catch of fish. The others did not remain unaware. They were quickly called to help out and participate at this wonderful occurrence. Such is God’s grace, when one receives it, it cannot be contained. Others will notice it and will be called to participate in it. It’s no wonder the fishermen left everything behind and followed Christ.

In times of weariness, in times of what seems like fruitless prayer, fruitless activity, let us not lose hope. God’s overabundant grace is at hand. Let us persevere, and when we receive it, call upon others to share it with us.
