Memorial of Saints Cyril, Monk, and Methodius, Bishop
The Syrophoenician woman in today’s gospel saw something in Jesus which could not be contained. It was power. It was mercy. It was love. She goes to him to intercede for her daughter, well aware that her request went against the established norms. She sensed that even a tiny fraction, “the scraps” of Christ’s healing love, would make her daughter well. Because of her great faith, Jesus drives the demon out of her daughter.
It’s very easy to take Jesus for granted. He is in the tabernacle, in the mass we celebrate, in holy Scripture. We go to him in prayer, and he is there for us.
Do we have the faith of the Syrophoenician woman when we encounter Christ who wishes to give himself unreservedly to us? Are we aware of the awesome power and might we have before us?
