Today’s readings recall that Jesus did not come to abolish the law and the prophets, rather to fulfill what the prophets and the law had to say. Like the man who came to Jesus and asked which of the laws were the most important, we too look at the laws and required behaviors of our faith and may be a bit bewildered, especially when taking a brief perusal of canon law. A concern for law for the law’s own sake would be foolish. Instead, we as Christians must remember that the laws of the Church are ultimately founded on the two great laws of Christ; love of God and love of neighbor. Laws become complex because humanity involves itself in complex things. But ultimately, what Christian law wishes to achieve is that work of Christ that moves towards love of God and love of neighbor.
