The Easter Vigil in the Holy Night of Easter
The mystery of Easter is beautifully illustrated in an ancient homily found in the Office of Readings. As the Apostle’s creed tells us, Christ descended into hell, desiring to free those who were living in darkness. Finding Adam, Christ says to him, “I am your God who for your sake have become your son…I order you O sleeper, to awake. I did not create you to be a prisoner in hell. Rise from the dead, for I am the life of the dead.”
It is the mystery that is at the center of our Christian faith. We can spend a lifetime contemplating God’s enormous act of love, mercy, and humility. Let us do so and live rejoicing. For our sake, He is risen! Alleluia!
