Thursday of the Sixth Week of Easter
The gospel today speaks of remaining in God’s love by following his commandments. Readings such as these buttress the Catholic position that works are consequential to salvation. Although we are saved by the life, death, and resurrection of Christ, this work demands an appropriate response. This response to the work of Christ is stated clearly in today’s gospel when Jesus notes that those who wish to stay in his love will follow his commandants. What are these commandments? The answer Jesus himself gave when someone wanted to establish a priority of all the laws governing Jewish practice. Jesus stated two: Love of God and love of neighbor. John the evangelist makes it very clear that our faith find extension in action.
