Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles

Peter and Paul, the twin pillars of the Church: so different in talents, temperaments; cultural, social, educational backgrounds. Yet, they shared traits in common. The one denied Jesus during his Passion; the other persecuted Jesus after Pentecost. There are many other similarities and differences that identify each.

But what is important is that each allowed himself to be grasped by God in giving witness to Christ and his saving mission. This commitment was finally crowned by martyrdom. Such is the one feature of their different yet complementary vocations for us today.

Each of us is called by God our Father to give witness to Christ’s mission. Providing we cooperate with his grace, we do it differently. But, as we shall clearly see when we are with Peter and Paul, our efforts are complementary.

Saints Peter and Paul intercede for us now, singularly and as a communityto respond to the unique vocation each has received.

And pray for the Church today, which so badly needs the presence of another duo, another Peter and Paul.
