Friday of the Fifteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Jesus is not calling us to disobedience. When He chastises the Pharisees for how they see the Law, He does not tell them to ignore the Sabbath. He tells them that they do not understand the Law, and they have forgotten where the Law came from. We do not obey the Law because it is the Law. We obey the Law because it is from God.

The grace of obedience is that it allows the voice of another to be in our minds and hearts. As we go through life, we know that we are not alone if we are able to obey. If all we do is obey the Law for the Law’s sake, then we will have the voice of the Law in our minds and hearts, no more, no less. But if we obey the Law because it is from God, we will have the voice of God in our minds and hearts. This is the obedience we strive for: the obedience that keeps God deep within us wherever we may go.
