You have to love St. Peter, who with childlike, direct and honest simplicity, often says what’s on everyone’s mind. “We have given up everything and followed you. What will there be for us?” he asks. It’s difficult not to relate to him. After all, true discipleship demands much sacrifice. What’s in it for us?
Jesus responds that we will receive a hundred times more and enjoy eternal life. We can try, but we’ll fall short of understanding what this actually looks like. As St. Paul says to the Corinthians, eye has not seen, nor ear heard what God has ready for those who love him (1Corinthians 2:9). We might catch a glimpse of it in this life, but the best is yet to come.
