Memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary

A wedding is a special event. Not only do the bride and groom wear special attire, but we, as guests also put on our best clothes. This is a once-in-a-lifetime event that celebrates a transcendent union of love. The occasion demands it of us.

Jesus in today’s gospel tells of a king, who seeing a guest not wearing a wedding garment, has him bound and thrown out into the darkness. This may seem excessive and harsh. What if the guest simply didn’t have a wedding garment?

If we look closely, we’ll see that the parable is speaking to us of another transcendent union of love, the one between Christ and his bride, the Church.

As baptized Christians, we all have been cloaked with Christ. But it is our duty, each and every day, to put on this wedding garment, that is, to put on Christ, through our actions, our thoughts and our dispositions. Our lives must announce that being one with Christ is a special, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and that we are ready for the transcendent union of love with our Lord.
