Watching construction workers build a building has always left me with the valuable insight about foundations. It seems as if those guys are in that hole for about a year and nothing seems to emerge. And then, the building seems to proceed story by story with amazing speed. After some investigation into the matter with a crane operator while at a nearby coffee shop, I was informed that any building of any magnitude requires a rather complex foundation. Soil density, rock formation, water currents, and any number of conditions require specific responses for each building. In today’s gospel, Jesus reminds his listeners about the need of a good foundation. Then as now, the foundation of any project portends the future viability of that project. Our gospel today encourages us to recall the simple fact that our decisions are based on fundamental values and that it is a good idea to examine these values and make sure they are the ones on which we wish to build the edifice of our lives.
