Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children (U.S.A.)
Once again, the Pharisees are confused as to the purpose of the Sabbath. They are enraged that Jesus would heal on the Sabbath, and Jesus challenges them asking whether on the Sabbath it is lawful “to save life rather than destroy it?” The Pharisees cannot imagine that the purpose of the Sabbath is being served when life is saved. They cannot imagine the Sabbath at the service of promoting human life. They cannot imagine that a great gift from God is at the service of life.
We must not be like the Pharisees. We must always be on the side of life. We must always put the gifts of God at the service of human life. Where death and threats to human life occur, we must work to heal it root and branch. God wants life. God wants every form of life. God wants every form of life protected and cherished by all those around it. This is why we have the gifts from Him that we do. On this day above all, we must recommit ourselves to the promotion and service of life with all that we have and all that we are.
