Today’s gospel shows the unfailing hope and faith that come from a father’s love for his child. This unnamed man, whose son had been possessed for many years, must have suffered disappointment after disappointment from his inability to help his child.
But he hears of these disciples who have been working miracles in the name of Jesus, and he decides to bring his son to them.
How must he have felt at seeing his son just as helpless as before?
Upon seeing Jesus, he pleads with the Lord with the little remaining hope he has left. From the honest depths of his hearts, he exclaims, “I believe; help my unbelief!” And even when many took him for dead, Jesus takes the boy by the hand and lifts him up to live his new life.
It is a father’s love that brings this young man to Jesus to be made whole again. For us as well, it is the love of our Father in heaven that brings Jesus to us and makes us whole.
