To be at home for an eternity, that is the promise that Jesus makes to his disciples in today’s gospel. Given the reality that most of us are currently living in this pandemic world, this probably doesn’t sound very appealing. But the home that Jesus speaks of is not one made of brick and drywall. If we are fortunate, our physical homes may resemble our heavenly home, but the one that is to come is far greater. This home is a place in which we are known and we know, in which we are loved and we love with absolutely nothing getting in the way. It’s where we feel at home, and this place has been prepared for us from all eternity.
How do we get there? By getting to know Jesus in prayer, in sacraments, in Scripture, in one another. This is the way. And this is the way home.
